The Viral 2-Ingredient Snack Our Test Kitchen Experts Can’t Stop Making

When a food influencer recently went viral on TikTok with a clever Babybel cheese hack, culinary experts everywhere knew they had to try it. The original video featured a peeled Babybel Original Cheese microwaved on a thick slice of bread, then spread like butter and topped with apple slices and a drizzle of honey. While the flavor profile was intriguing, our Test Kitchen knew there was a better way to perfect the texture.

The Science of Air Frying vs. Microwaving

While the idea of melted cheese on toast is brilliant, the original cooking method had a major flaw. Microwave ovens heat food from the inside out by agitating water molecules, which creates steam. When this moist heat is applied to bread, it almost always results in a soft, soggy mess.

To solve this issue, Senior Culinary Producer Nicole McLaughlin tested the hack using a trusty air fryer. Unlike microwaves, air fryers use convection fans to circulate dry, hot air rapidly, driving moisture out and heating the food from the outside in. This ensures the bread becomes perfectly crisped and golden while the cheese melts flawlessly on top, all in just 3 minutes!

Elevating the Flavor Profile

Once the cheese is melted and perfectly spreadable, you can customize the crisp toast with a variety of sweet or savory toppings. While the original hack used apples and honey, McLaughlin took it up a notch by finishing her crispy snack with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a dollop of sweet fig jam. The complex sweet and salty combination perfectly complements the mild, creamy cheese, proving that we have been eating Babybels wrong all along.

Ingredients

  • The Base:

  • 1 slice thick white bread

  • 1 Babybel Original Cheese round, peeled of wax

  • The Optional Toppings:

  • 1 tbsp fig jam

  • 1/2 tsp flaky sea salt

Directions

  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Assemble the Toast: Lay the untoasted slice of thick white bread directly in the air fryer basket. Place the unwrapped Babybel cheese round right in the center of the bread.
  • Air Fry: Cook the bread and cheese in the air fryer until the bread is perfectly crispy and golden, and the cheese is fully melted and soft, about 3 minutes.
  • Spread the Cheese: Carefully remove the hot toast from the air fryer. Immediately use a butter knife to spread the melted Babybel cheese evenly across the toasted bread.
  • Garnish and Serve: Top the melted cheese with the optional 1 tablespoon of fig jam and a generous sprinkle of flaky sea salt. Serve immediately while hot and crispy!

Notes

  • The Microwave Flaw: Do not use a microwave for this recipe! The microwave will steam the bread and leave it soggy, whereas the air fryer ensures a perfect crunch.
  • Sweet & Savory Variations: If you don’t have fig jam, try the original viral variation by topping the melted cheese with thin apple slices and a generous drizzle of honey.
  • Bread Choice: A sturdy, thick-cut artisan bread like sourdough or Texas toast holds up best to the melted cheese and jam.
